On January 23, the premiere of a diploma performance by a graduate of Ilia State University’s Master’s program will take place at Iliauni Theatre.

Based on Wilfried Happel’s ten-part play, director Mariam Jamerashvili has staged the performance The Art of Living. The production supervisor is Associate Professor Ioane (Vano) Khutsishvili.

The performance explores the inner dialogue taking place in the human mind, where the struggle with oneself becomes the decisive path to overcoming suicidal intent and continuing the fight for existence. Deep loneliness and isolation, within an alienated and manipulated reality, can lead a person to a sense of life’s meaninglessness, from which suicide may appear to be one possible escape.

The man, like the woman, experiences profound loneliness. For him, creating the play and allowing the woman into his life is not only an ambition as a playwright, but also a desperate attempt to fill his own existential void and escape loneliness. The woman becomes not merely an object to be saved, but a field of projection—someone through whom the man attempts to find meaning in existence.

The performance features Nino Chaduneli and Shalva Chalagashvili.
